To put it simply, Friday the 13th is an unlucky day according to superstitions. Many people actually dread this day to a great extent. There is even a term for the fear of Friday the 13th; it is called paraskavedekatriaphobia. Various phenomenon and events have been linked to this day and many films have been made on this theme over the years.
How did this superstition came to be? The origin of this superstition is shrouded in mystery; however, there are quite some theories on how it originated. This theory dates back to so many centuries, in fact. 13 guests were present at Jesus Christ’s last supper and on the next day (considered Good Friday), Jesus was crucified. This is where the superstition of Friday the 13th is believed to have come from. Another popular myth came from the events surrounding the massacre of Knights Templar. On Friday, October 13 in 1307, Pope Clement V and King Phillip IV of France had the Knights Templar arrested and burnt at stake. This is believed to be the origin of Friday the 13th superstition by many. Some historians believe that this is the day on which Adam and Eve ate the apple from tree of knowledge of good and evil.
The publication of Thomas W. Lawson’s popular novel Friday the Thirteenth in 1907 is credited for popularizing this superstition. This book sold out well and was even made into a feature film.
Fridays have never been the same ever since the commercially successful ‘Friday the 13th’ Hollywood horror movie series came into the scene. Jason and this film franchise popularized this day even more.
The stories about Friday the 13th are never ending. The fears surrounding this day have led many people to refrain from doing anything significant or of importance on this day. As a result there is not much activity on this day. Numerous surveys and statistics have been released proving this.
